Werk.Baby Training

Overview and Objectives

The objective of the Werk.Baby project is to empower independent artists to improve their brand messaging and communication through building their own website using inexpensive services. The domain Werk.Baby was purchased for $1.88 for the first year, and the various apps used to build and run this site are completely free.

While this is harder and a bit more complicated than building a website with an all-in-one service like Squarespace or Wix, after the initial setup, the site development is relatively similar. And after completing all of these steps, you will be more familiar with the inner workings of your new domain, and it will be much easier to make changes and add other services in the future. Including things like Squarespace and Wix.

If everything were to go perfectly, and you were already familiar with all of the apps that we're using, then the actual technical setup side of getting the domain attached to the website could be finished in under an hour. And creating a simple landing page with links and a few other pages like you saw on the Werk.Baby Project Homepage would take 2-3 hours.

The training is organized in a way to allow you to pace yourself with the work that is involved, with a focus on practicality. For example, the third and sixth of the nine steps have you take a break from the technical side and start working on the actual website design.

The services we will be using:

You will need to create free accounts with each of these services. You can do that ahead of time, or when it comes up in the training. You should also create a new Gmail account for website administration, even if you have an existing business account. The reasoning for that will be explained later.

Some optional services we will be using:

Blogger is just tied to your gmail account, but you should still create a new account that you use for adult content only. Acuity Scheduling is my favorite app for scheduling appointments, and it integrates into google sites well and the free version is great. You'll need a free account for that.

I've suggested Mega for cloud storage and sharing files with clients, because it has a good free option and a good record for privacy. But you can use any service you like. Dropbox is a popular and well known option for that. Whichever service you use, you should follow strict compartmentalization. Which means that your cloud service provider should not be able to see what's in your content. The solution is to Zip it before you ship it. And create a separate account just for that purpose. NEVER use your primary email account for a service where you distribute adult content.

In any case, we are going to be using "Branded Short Links" like this: Werk.Baby/bidhrm5yjn5e for sharing content links with clients.
